Women who love women and Local History
The Charlotte Museum is organising its first local history event on Sunday, September 12 at 2pm. Museum founder Miriam Saphira will describe how the museum was established and what was involved in setting it up. She will describe the requirements for a museum venue, compliance issues, funding, policies, museum standards, and how its collections are catalogued and conserved.
Jenny Rankine will describe the differing attitudes to women who loved women in New Zealand since the time of colonisation. Women-loving women haven't always been faced with the current mixture of stigma and chic. For example, in the 1800s openly loving relationships between women who lived together were accepted and sometimes widely praised.
The event has been widely advertised to local history societies, and is planned as the first in a series of local history events. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion after both speakers, followed by nibbles and drinks. Entry is by koha. -
Celebrating 20 years of the Tamaki Makaurau Lesbian Newsletter
The Charlotte Museum is hosting this soiree on Saturday, September 18 from 6pm. It is open to all lesbian readers, subscribers and contributors to the newsletter over the years.
Lavender Lips will read writing inspired by the newsletter's coverage of lesbian communities in Aotearoa over the last two decades, and there will be a wonderful chocolate cake by designer Chris Free, as well as other nibbles and drinks. Participants are asked to wear something purple, bring a plate of finger food to share, and their newsletter-related stories. -
